Who doesn’t love a chance to snuggle a baby? It’s one of the best perks of being a newborn videographer and photographer! While each session has its own pros and cons — family pictures, engagement shots, headshots, senior portraits — there’s something incredibly special about working with tiny babies. The atmosphere, the memories, the smell of their sweet little heads — it’s priceless!
Whether you're preparing for a newborn videography or photography session, here are some of my favorite tips to ensure you get the best experience:
Schedule an In-Home Session
In-home sessions are relaxing, easy, relatively quick, and most importantly, meaningful. There’s a reason people always talk about “the place we brought our babies home.” It’s because those first memories in your home are precious. Whether it’s the nursery, your favorite cozy spot, or even the family room, being in your own space is irreplaceable.
(Bonus: During our long Michiana winters, a home session is the perfect way to stay warm!)
Warm Up the House
For those adorable close-ups of baby’s tiny hands, feet, and little tummy, the warmth of the room is crucial! The babies will be much happier if they’re warm and comfy. Make sure to turn up the heat and plan your outfit accordingly — a cozy environment is key to a peaceful session.
Keep It Simple
Let your baby steal the spotlight! A simple comforter on a bed, or using the crib and a nearby chair in the nursery, makes the perfect setting for newborn photos. No need for elaborate setups or props — let your baby be the star of the show. If you have a window nearby, the natural light will add to the warmth of the moment.
Go With the Flow
Although it's important to try and have your baby fed and content before the session, things rarely go as planned — and that's okay! Newborn sessions often include a feeding break, wardrobe change, or other little hiccups. I always build in some extra time for these moments. Stay calm, I’ve got it covered!
