Friday Five | Lake Michigan Trips

Now that we are in summer vacation mode, I thought I’d share my favorite Lake Michigan trips for anyone looking to travel for a weekend.

Nick and I spent almost every anniversary going somewhere in Michigan when we were newlyweds. We didn’t have any money, so we couldn’t go far or be away from work for a long time. But we love Michigan! It’s so close, so beautiful, and feels like home since I grew up going to one of the inland lakes.

1.) South Haven & Saugatuck/Douglas

I put these together because we stayed between the two areas and got to experience both of them. We stayed at Seymour House twice, our only bed and breakfast experience, and we really liked it. South Haven has a beautiful beach, a fun downtown with all the ice cream, restaurants, and shopping you would need. There’s even a little movie theater if you get rained out! Watching the kite surfing is fun too, as it’s always really windy by the water. Douglas has some of my favorite pizza ever—Back Alley Pizza is worth the drive!

2.) Holland

Holland is a great little town to stay in. The Tulip Festival is its main claim to fame, but I’ve never been. My husband and I like to go there, get a hotel, find some great food, shop, and visit the beach before heading back. It’s the kind of cute downtown I wish Mishawaka would have.

3.) Ludington

Beautiful! We spent most of a chilly October weekend here hiking in the state park. It’s on my must-camp-at list. We walked the pier and ate at House of Flavors, a 50’s-style ice cream place. The food was so much better than I thought it was going to be. I want to come back in the summer!

4.) St Joe

Everyone in South Bend knows about St. Joe, but if I have any out-of-town readers, I had to include it! Amazing beach, cute downtown, carousel, awesome pizza, kids' museum, golf—it's a super easy weekend getaway on a gorgeous Lake Michigan bluff.

5.) Rent a house on an inland lake

This is my favorite. I grew up going to Diamond Lake. Summer isn’t summer without being on a lake in Michigan! Twice now, we’ve found a lake house and rented it for the week, and they have been my favorite, most relaxing vacations. We are planning to do this in 2020, and probably every summer after! This video was taken at our last vacation, one of my favorite weeks of my whole life. <3
