Mr. Max's First Birthday Pictures | Goshen, IN Family Photographer

Every photography business course I’ve ever taken has included the same exercise: “Write out your ideal client.”

And every single time, I’ve started the list… and then quit halfway through.

How can I possibly put into words what makes the perfect client?

It always starts off easy enough:

  • Values photography

  • Loves their family

  • Wants to pass down memories to their children

  • Has good values and morals

And then I get stuck.

Most photography business coaches tell you to keep going — describe where they shop, how they spend their weekends, where they vacation. But honestly? I just can’t. Everyone is different, and that’s what I love most about this work.

I don’t want a “cookie-cutter” version of a client — I want real people with their own stories, quirks, and ways of showing love.

So when I think about who my “ideal client” is now, I don’t have to imagine it anymore.
Because I’ve already found them — the Yerger family.

Dream Clients, Right Here

I’ve been lucky enough to photograph this beautiful family three times this year, and every single session has left my heart full.

If I had to add a few more qualities to that “ideal client” list, I’d say:

Supportive – Amber is one of my biggest cheerleaders. She’s always commenting on my posts, sharing my work, and telling others about her experience. Seeing that my photos resonate with someone means the world to me.

Trusting – They trust me with everything: the location, timing, light, poses, and even which photos look best in an album. That kind of trust gives me confidence — and confident photographers create their best work.

Grateful – Amber’s heart for her family shines through in everything she does. When I see her share about motherhood with so much gratitude, I can’t help but want to give her every single beautiful image I can.

I’ve realized that what I value most in my clients isn’t where they shop or what kind of car they drive — it’s their heart. Their kindness, their encouragement, their authenticity.

The Session

The Yergers joined me at one of my new favorite fall spots in Mishawaka, Indiana. The light was golden, the air was crisp, and everything just clicked.

These first birthday photos for Max turned out absolutely perfect (if I do say so myself!). He’s such a happy, curious little guy — and watching him explore, walk, and smile at his parents made for the sweetest images.

Of course, because I can never resist combining photo and film, I included a Mini Film to go along with their gallery. These little video add-ons have become such a meaningful way to preserve the feeling of the moment — and they’re quickly becoming one of my favorite parts of every session.

My Favorites

I have so many favorites from this session, but I especially love the photos of Max with his mama. There’s something about the way he looks up at her — it’s tender, trusting, and just so full of love.

What about you? Which one is your favorite?
