Modern Home Family Videos

I was 10 (maybe 11), my sister was a couple years behind me, and my dad borrowed a friend’s camcorder for our joint backyard birthday party. Ten cousins sprinted through the grass doing cartwheels and knock-knock jokes while Dad experimented with stop-motion—poof, we’d disappear; poof, we’d reappear. It was silly and perfect.

And honestly? I remember that party because there’s video of it. Without the footage, the memories would be fuzzier—just flashes instead of a whole story.

I also remember the after—begging to go straight inside and watch it back. That feeling hasn’t changed. My own kids do the same now: they rewatch our family films on repeat. Sometimes they choose them over Netflix (which makes my heart do a happy dance). I get it. Seeing our own real life, our voices, our faces—it hits different.

Why modern home family videos matter

One of my favorite emails this year was from a mom who said her kids love replaying her wedding film—even though they aren’t in it. She also compiles long, simple home videos from their year, and her kids watch those constantly too. I saw myself in her. I’ve been filming our family since my oldest was a baby almost 13 years ago. Over time, those little clips grew into the family films I now create for my own crew and for clients who want the same time-capsule feeling.

She sent me a note later that said, “We’ve watched our film a dozen times already—everyone cried the first time, and now we just grin the whole way through.” That’s the magic.

If the idea of a modern home family video lights you up—but the “how” feels overwhelming—I’d love to create one for you. This is an investment that appreciates. Five, ten, twenty years from now, you’ll love it even more than you do on delivery day. Hearing your toddler’s voice, seeing the way your baby fits in your arms, catching your partner’s laugh in the background—those tiny details become priceless.

And circling back to my birthday tape: it’s not that every moment must be recorded. But the little bits we do bottle up—the voices of our parents, the chaos of candle-blowing, the look you give your kid when they say something hysterical—become a family heirloom. Getting to see my parents young, in the same stage of life I’m in now? Treasure.

What working together looks like

  • Real life, beautifully: I film in your home (and yard/porch if you’d like), guiding lightly while letting your rhythms lead.

  • No pressure: Diaper change? Snack break? Nap? We flow with it.

  • A keepsake you’ll replay: Your finished film is edited to music with ambient sound, so you can hear the laughs and little voices.
