Growing up on a lake in southwest Michigan shaped almost everything about me. My favorite holiday? The Fourth of July — how could it not be? Picture this: boat parades, fireworks echoing across the water like a boomerang, and the sound of horns tooting for those pretty weeping willow fireworks. My happy place has always been the end of a pier, coffee in hand, watching the mist rise from the water and listening to the clank-clank of the flagpoles. My best childhood memories are running barefoot with my “sisters,” balancing on slippery seawalls, spending quarters at the marina, and sneaking over to the private beach to swim unsupervised.
Now, years later, I get to be invited into other people’s happy places — to record them just being themselves with their favorite people, in the spots that hold their hearts.
Location Details
In July, Baldwin Lake in Union, Michigan became the setting for this beautiful family’s first-ever film with me. We’d done photos together before, but this year, she took the leap and booked a family video. And I got it immediately — there’s just something about capturing your family in your place. The lake house was their haven, and filming there was like bottling up the joy of their summers.

This session was pure nostalgia for me — little girls giggling on the pontoon, setting up a “seashell shop” on the boat floor, taking brave jumps into the water, and snacking before heading back to the house for crafts while dinner cooked. I’m surrounded by boys in my own life, so their sisterly energy brought back a flood of my own childhood memories.
