Friday Five: My Favorite Lake Michigan Weekend Trips from South Bend
Last updated: July 2026
I've refreshed this guide with my family's latest beach favorites, updated practical information, nearby recommendations, and new photos from years of exploring Lake Michigan with my own kids.
When Nick and I were newly married, we didn’t have the budget for big vacations. What we did have was a reliable car, a free weekend, and a love for Michigan.
Over the years, those little getaways became some of our favorite memories. Now, with kids in tow, we still find ourselves heading toward Lake Michigan whenever we need a quick reset.
If you’re looking for an easy weekend trip from South Bend, these are the five places I come back to again and again.
South Haven + Saugatuck/Douglas
Drive time: ~1 hr 45 min from South Bend
This is my pick when I want beaches + shopping + great food all in one weekend. South Haven has a beautiful public beach, a walkable downtown, and plenty of ice cream stops. Saugatuck and Douglas add art galleries, boutiques, and some of my favorite pizza in Michigan.
Don’t miss:Back Alley Pizza in Douglas and a coffee and pastry from the cutest bakery in South Haven.
Pair it with: A dune ride, or a stroll through downtown Saugatuck.
2. Holland
Drive Time: ~2 hr 15 min from South Bend
Holland feels like the kind of town you wander without a plan. We usually grab coffee and a waffle (SO GOOD), browse the shops downtown, spend a few hours at the beach, and call it a perfect day.
Don’t miss: Let the kids run out some energy at Sally Smoly Nature Playscape (free!), Windmill Island Gardens (spring’s Tulip Festival is on my bucket list.. still haven’t been) or Holland State Park and the Big Red Lighthouse (summer).
Nearby favorite: Try some samples at Cherry Republic and then head to my favorite cutie-pie store Gezellig. I wish I could open a shop like that here. Sigh. I also love the adorable and delicious Bowerman’s and delightfully wandering through JB and Me.
Holland’s Big Red Lighthouse, beach and Lake Michigan, seen from a short hike through the woods and up a bunch of steps.
3. Ludington
~3 hr 15 min from South Bend
Ludington is the farthest drive on this list, but it’s the one that feels most like a true escape. We spent a chilly October weekend hiking through Ludington State Park, and it instantly went on my “come back for a full summer week” list. I know it’s highly debated, but this is where the Northern Michigan feels start for me.
Don’t miss: the lighthouse, the pier, and a hike through the dunes and forest trails. Watching the Badger come in or go out is fun, too.
Eat here: House of Flavors — the burgers and ice cream are worth the wait. We stop here every time we come home from our ‘up north’ week in the summer. Tradition!
4. St. Joseph
~45 min from South Bend
Or as everyone around here calls it, St. Joe. I overhead some people talking about going up to “St. Joseph” for the beach and pizza and I knew they weren’t locals :) This trip is really too short to even consider staying overnight. It’s an easy day trip that gets you a full day of fun even with the round trip drive. St. Joe has a gorgeous beach, a bluff-top downtown, a carousel, splash pad, and enough restaurants to keep everyone happy.
My family favorites:Silver Beach Pizza is yummy and a vibe.
Also nearby: the Curious Kids’ Museum and (duh) Silver Beach. (Lots of other local gems are linked in the blog post at they very bottom, so keep reading!)
Sigh!!
5.) Rent a House on an Inland Lake (My Real Favorite)
Honestly? This is the trip I dream about every summer.
I grew up spending time on Diamond Lake, and nothing feels more like Michigan than waking up to calm water, drinking coffee on a dock, and letting the kids spend the day swimming and fishing.
We’ve rented a few inland lake houses over the years, and they’ve been some of the most relaxing vacations our family has ever taken.
Look for lakes near: Cassopolis, Edwardsburg or Dowagiac for an easy drive from South Bend.
