A South Bend Mom's Guide to 5 Lake Michigan Beaches for Every Kind of Summer Day

There are two things my family never gets tired of: summer and Lake Michigan.

Every summer, we find ourselves packing towels, snacks (always Pringles, grapes, and for some reason Twizzlers?… never eaten on another occasion all year long), shovels, and a cooler full of drinks, and making the drive toward the water. I know it sounds crazy, but since I grew up on an inland Michigan lake, come June, I feel Michigan actually calling me. Told you it sounded crazy!

We live in South Bend, so naturally Lake Michigan’s very close shores have become one of our favorite places to slow down and make memories together.

One of my favorite things is that no two Lake Michigan beaches feel the same. Some are made for toddlers and stress-free family outings. Some feel like an adventure. Some have charming downtowns just steps from the sand. And some make you feel like you've discovered something special.

So instead of ranking the "best" beaches, I thought I'd share my favorites based on the kind of summer day you're hoping to have.

This place is practically designed for families.

There's a huge beach, plenty of parking, bathrooms, yummy food options, and enough extra activities to keep everyone happy if the kids decide they're done swimming after twenty minutes (not my experience).

From the very close 3 giant pay-to-park lots, you’ll need to haul your gear across a large swath of thee most perfect sand, but once you’ve done that, your golden. Or silver. :)

Our family especially loves that you can easily turn it into a full-day adventure.

New Buffalo! It’s like a small town movie setting on the beach. You can picture a Rom-Com here.

Spend the morning at the beach, wander downtown for lunch, stop for ice cream, browse a few shops, eat at one of the really yummy nearby restaurants, and somehow the entire day feels relaxed instead of rushed.

This is also our favorite place to hunt for beach glass. I could happily spend hours searching for tiny treasures along the shoreline. It’s worth the back ache the next day.

I think that's what I love most about New Buffalo—it offers a little bit of everything.

🥾 Have Adventurous Kids? Spend the Day at Warren Dunes.

Warren Dunes is the beach for families who like an adventure. Getting very sandy, very sweaty, and making memories in the process.

The dunes are absolutely massive. I didn’t even know this beach was called Warren Dunes until I was an adult, because we all call it Tower Hill. Tower Hill is a very good name, guys. Kids love climbing it. Parents usually wonder why they agreed to climb them. Then everyone gets to the top and remembers exactly why. Running down without falling is a fun little challenge, too.

The views are incredible.

This feels less like a beach trip and more like an adventure.

• Explore the creek at the South End of the beach… take it back all the way and cover yourself with the clay. When you see everyone covered in faded mud on the beach, this is what they’ve been up to.

Some beaches feel exciting.

Union Pier feels peaceful. Sleepy. Slow.

This is the kind of place where you bring a book, stay longer than you planned, and lose track of time.

The atmosphere feels quieter and more residential than some of the larger beaches, which is exactly why so many families return year after year.

🌊 Want to Feel Like You've Discovered Something Special? Visit Grand Mere State Park.

Grand Mere isn't the easiest beach to reach, but it’s a really fun little adventure hike.

I would NOT bring the big coolers, umbrellas and bags of toys to this one. Minimalism, people. You'll walk through the woods up to the foot of a dune, with no water in sight. After climbing that dune, you’ll see the water…another dune or two away.

But when you finally reach the shoreline, the natural beauty feels almost untouched.

Sometimes that's exactly what you need.

• Pack a picnic, but enjoy it at one of the picnic spaces on several inland lakes at the park. There aren’t a lot of food options nearby and you definitely don’t want to lug coolers over to the Lake Michigan shore.

Know Before You Go

A few things we've learned after many Lake Michigan beach days from a true safety police type gal:

• The water is usually colder than ocean beach people expect, even in summer. This is not the Gulf of Mexico! Prepare yourself.

• Conditions can change quickly, so always pay attention to beach flags and swimming advisories. Be really careful along the piers!

• You’ll have to pay at most places to park. Usually there’s a kiosk, occasionally a drive-up booth. Don’t try and cheat, you’ll get a ticket.

• Sometimes you can find places to park for free or for cheap, but be prepared to walk far with all your junk.

• Snacks are never optional.

• Which Lake Michigan beach is best for toddlers?

  Silver Beach gets my vote for young children because of its easy access, bathrooms, playground, and nearby activities. The Curious Kids Museum is SO cute. My kids requested going all the time from age 3-7.

• Which beach is closest to South Bend?

  All of these listed are less than an hour from driveway to sand! We have it so good in South Bend, guys. New Buffalo is one of the quickest and easiest Lake Michigan day trips from South Bend.

• Which beach is best for beach glass hunting?

  I have found the most at New Buffalo! It’s great for skipping rocks when it’s not crowded, too.

• Which beach is best for adventurous kids?

  Warren Dunes wins for kids who love climbing and exploring.

• Which beach has the best sand?

  Silver! Soft, pillowy (but really hot) sand that extends all the way out to the buoys. Very few rocks or seaweed in the water at all. A dream.

• Which beach is best if we want fewer crowds?

  Union Pier is quieter and slower paced than the large beaches, but parking is very limited, so you have to get there early and get lucky.

At the end of the day, I don't think you can go wrong with a Lake Michigan beach day. Every beach has its own personality, and part of the fun is discovering which ones become your family's favorites. Pack the towels, bring the snacks, and soak up every minute of these beautiful Midwest summers. I try to make it to Lake Michigan as often as possible during the summer, and even scored an 80 degree solo beach day on my birthday in late September last year, but let's be honest—it's never enough. How incredible would it be to hit the lottery and move up there? #dreams
