The best tip I can offer any new mom about scheduling your pictures is to remain flexible with realistic expectations.

For that matter, new mom, that’s good advice about the whole newborn thing.

I LOVE Fresh 48 sessions (see why right here), but let’s be real. There are a few things you should be aware of when scheduling these sessions. If you read through this list and still want a Fresh 48 session, you should schedule today! They aren’t for everybody.

  1. It’s a Busy Place

There will be interruptions. Doctors. Nurses. Lactation Consultants. If you can shrug those off, so can I. This baby, though, just returned from his circumcision and he was not as happy to see me as I was to see him. There will be some challenges, and baby might not be a snuggly pile of squish during your session. I for one, think the sweet little cries are just as cute to capture as the sleepy faces.

  • Siblings’ Reactions

You have the dream of your children coming in to meet their newborn baby brother, holding them gently and marveling and their good fortune. Yeah, that doesn’t happen! Hahahah! We all wish it would, but tempering those expectations a bit is a really good thing to do before your Fresh 48 session. in fact, this mom brought her 3 children up the day before I came, instead. She said it was W-I-L-D. Taking photos of them seeing baby for the second time? Just as sweet, and a (little) less crazy. Whether you want me there for the first moment your older children meet the baby, or if you want me to come later, I’m game. Being realistic about your expectations of this moment might help you feel less stressed out!

  • Take a Minute to Enjoy the Moment

So much easier said than done. Dad has driven back and forth from the hospital a few times, juggling kids and child care. Mom just gave birth. Everyone is a little bit stressed and rushed, tired and uncomfortable. While I am there, take the 5 or 10 minutes and just enjoy that baby.
