At Home Newborn Videography and Photos

Who doesn't love a chance to snuggle a baby?  It's one of the best perks of being a newborn videographer and photographer!  Taking family pictures, engagement pictures, headshots, senior pictures... they all have their own pros and cons.  Being around a tiny baby, though... oh I love it!  The atmosphere, the memories, the smell of their sweet little heads.  Gimme!

The following tips will help you prepare for either a newborn videography session (like above) or photography session (below).

If you are planning for a newborn session, here are some of my favorite tips:

  • Schedule an in-home session.  They are relaxing, easy, relatively quick and most importantly, meaningful.  You know how when someone is having a difficult time with an upcoming move and they always say, "It's the place we brought our babies home."  There is a reason they say that.  The memories they have made inside those homes are precious.  There is something special about being with your favorite people in your favorite place.  (Bonus! It’s freezing here for half the year so an in-home Michiana newborn session is a no-brainer during the winter.)  (For some of my favorite in-home sessions, check out this, this and this.)

  • Warm up your house for the session.  I love taking pictures of baby's feet, hands, chubby thighs and tummies.  The babies will be much happier if they are warm! You should plan to warm up the house or room a lot more than usual. Plan your outfit accordingly.

  • Keep it simple.  A simple comforter on a big bed will let your baby steal the spotlight in her photos. Same story in the nursery.  The crib and chair are perfect places to tidy up, especially if you have a window nearby. Don’t worry about elaborate set ups or things that feel contrived.

  • Go with the flow. While it is important to try and have the baby fed and as happy as possible, I always plan on at least a portion of my shooting time going toward baby care. I’m almost positive every single newborn session has needed a nursing "snack" break, or a wardrobe change due to spit up or worse, no worries!  I build in some time just for those reasons during newborn sessions. Stay calm! I’m in no rush.

  • Enjoy.  I am here to bless you with a priceless gift that will last a lifetime.  I’d love for you to try and enjoy it.
